Chapter Five

Petar paced back and forth in the large bedroom that belonged to him and Zaa’er. The past six days had been hell. What had happened was a new weight to add to his shoulders. He had killed Zorbek trying to save Zaa’er, someone who could most likely be worse than Zorbek himself. He had intended to find his mate that night and discuss with him their positions as mates, to learn if what his brothers and their mates had told him had been true. But when he heard the attack, he had shifted and burst through the doors, protecting the male as a true mate should. But his mate had been badly wounded, and he had spent every waking minute since then pacing the floor and checking in on Zaa’er.

This evening, when he had gone to check in on Zaa’er again, Kort had refused him entrance. The male had been distant himself; refusing to look him in the eye, much less give away any type of emotion. It was as if Kort had placed a wall between them, something unbreakable. Petar could only guess that Zaa’er had said something, and the one male in the mansion who had been there for him, even with the wrong intentions, had taken heed and made sure that Petar knew it.

Glancing around the opulent bedroom—everything carved from willow wood and decorated with thick tapestries—his eyes settled on the large bed. It took up the majority of the center, with high posts that led into the ceiling as if the bed itself had grown out of the mansion’s stone. It was intimidating, like its owner. He had slept alone in it many times over the last few weeks, but it had yet to lose the scent of steel, blood, and spice—Zaa’er’s scent.

The want inside him to share his bed with his mate was growing. What had started out as a deal had changed. He went from not caring if he found love, to yearning for it. It most likely came from witnessing the passion shared between his brothers and their mates. But then again, maybe he had always yearned for love. He was tainted from the raping he’d endured, but even tainted; he wanted something pure to save his soul. If it could be saved.

A knock at the door pulled his gaze away from the bed. Walking over, he opened the large oak door to find Raik on the other side, the large male’s intimidating gaze zeroing in on Petar’s eyes. “Yes?” Petar whispered, unsure about the male and his objective. He hadn’t had much interaction with the Weapons Master.

“Zaa’er has called a meeting of the pack in the throne room.”

Petar blinked in disbelief. “He’s well enough for that?”

Raik didn’t move an inch. “Kort has said so, and Zaa’er is determined to hold audience.” With a nod, he turned and headed back toward the throne room. Before he turned the corner, he stopped and faced Petar again. “Your brothers are in attendance.”

Petar sprung into action.
